No Wrist Speed? No Problem: Secrets Of Reverse Dart Thrower Picking Motion
This lesson on "dart thrower" wrist motion is the culmination of years of work by the Cracking the Code team. If you want to go even further, you can find the more detailed, step-by-step tutorial for this technique in our instructional material here: troygrady.com/primer/motion-tutorials/
I don't have special genetics for fast picking. I was never unusually good at video games or sports requiring elite hand-eye coordination. And I couldn't play at these tempos until I figured out the concepts and techniques you'll learn in this lesson. In fact, my primary skill is being NOT GOOD at stuff, but realizing there's usually a trick to it that can be figured out with critical thinking and enough trial and error.

Переглядів 20 тис.9 місяців тому
Quintuplets are great for getting "fast" energy at tempos where sixteenths aren't exciting enough, and sextuplets are too fast to play. In this chapter of the Metronomic Rock | DSX seminar, the amazing Tommo from the Cracking the Code team provides his tips for conquering this daunting and somehwat alien rhythmic grouping. The complete seminar contains *39* chapters just like this one, with two...
Looping Pentatonic DSX Picking Hack You Need To Know
Переглядів 20 тис.10 місяців тому
Tommo's new seminar ( troygrady.com/seminars/metronomic-rock-dsx/ ) is full of essential ideas that make the DSX picking style functional for everyday playing across a wide array of phrases. Here's a great one. As you may know, if you're a DSX player, this means your picking motion traces a diagonal path such that downstrokes "escape" and become your string switch pickstroke. The implications o...

Escape Angle - Does It Matter?
Переглядів 27 тис.11 місяців тому
The most common picking motions all produce some type of escape ( troygrady.com/primer/reference/escape-motion-reference/ ), where the pick pulls away from the guitar body during at least a portion of its travel. Does the angle of the escape matter? It can! NBA players shoot foul shots with an arc because approaching the hoop from above makes it a larger target. Similarly, approaching the targe...
Using "Less Pick"
Переглядів 31 тис.11 місяців тому
Why don't we talk more about using a small amount of pick on the string. Isn't it important to have smooth attack? Yes! But when you film technique, the actual amount of pick attack doesn't always look like what you think it's going to look like. You'd be surprised how much pick can appear to contact the string while the attack can feel completely smooth and unobstructed to the player - especia...

No wah pedal? No problem! The "no wah" strumming pattern
Переглядів 443 тис.Рік тому
No wah pedal? No problem! Here's a fun pattern that uses Gypsy-style strumming technique to simulate the sound of a wah pedal. You start with a downstroke that strikes the top two or three strings, followed by an upstroke that only strikes the high E string - to get the wah "click". The third motion is a downstroke that taps your index finger nail on the lowest strings, approximately E or A, or...

This Should Not Be Possible: Displacement Fours
Переглядів 63 тис.Рік тому
A few posts back we were looking at how you can simplify complicated phrases with pickstroke displacement. Here's another example of that. In this example I'm doing descending fours - the version that starts on a downstroke - with a really simple Zakk Wylde-type picking motion that should definitely not be able to play this line. Check out how cool this is. I'm using a 3nps fingering, so techni...
Know Your Mistakes: What Is Pickstroke Displacement? The Paul Gilbert Lick
Переглядів 50 тис.Рік тому
One of the coolest picking "mistakes" we see in picking technique is what I call "displacement". It's when your picking hand subconsciously moves pickstrokes to a string *other* than the one you're fretting, to make a particular phrase easier to play. Here's an example of this on the classic "Paul Gilbert Lick". You can't play this with single escape motion, right? Think again! In this clip I'm...

Man I miss them 80s hair doos! lol! Outstanding lesson Vinnie now I got to get back to shredding!
bro could publish this stuff in a scientific journal.
Thanks to #MusicIsWin, I found you! 🤘🔥🎸
I think Mike Stern's technique of playing from the pickguard outward, using a large amount of surface area from either the edge or the flat face of the pick, does a great job of eliminating chirp. He also uses a thin or medium pick
These looks like dans dead strings ahahha
Can’t wait to see a deep dive playlist of vids dedicated to Matteo Mancuso unique approach to guitar picks
If you want to see and hear the greatest master of the speed and technique on the guitar in general, then listen to Michael Paouris on youtube performing "Paourissimo".It's simply funny how many levels below that is Andy Wood.To make things crazier the guitar is not Paouris' main instrument. In fact he's a bouzouki player first.Nobody, absolutely nobody in the world is capable of competing with him.Check it out if you think I'm exaggerating.
Hi Troy, I see you're using your elbow, also: ua-cam.com/video/NWuGkXhj0T8/v-deo.html ....how comes? You don't mention it in the video...
Try EQing it out of your guitar tracks, its almost impossible. Even when you identify the worst frequencies, if you notch them out, you lose so much presence and attack.
Does Troy post anymore?
Whoa, that's some serious effort and time, good skills man!
to do that many transcriptions with no software is insane!
Years ago Steve Morse gave me about 7 of his 1mm Dunlap picks which were a bit thicker than the Tortex ones I was using on that tour. When I signed with Ernie Ball I asked to make me a 1mm pick from a harder plastic. They have a slight bevel and they're great for string skipping and greater tone without as much attack . Never tried the ones you're showing. I'm happy with my EBs

cool upload...
This video is amazing! Can’t imagine how long you take on the editing ! Thank you
It's like listening to a machine without soul playing
Can’t wait to hear the solos he composes for the next Megadeth album🤟😎
I keep muting the strings I want to play when trying to get the good angle
does this mean we must always mix UPPS and DWPS when playing? I am confused

When you get to the point where you "don't even think about it" that's the point where the speed really kicks in. Molly can carry on a focused conversation with with one part of her brain while another part is focused completely on the playing. It's seem phenomenal, but practically anything can be learned and acquired with practice, passion, and patience.
where is this full episode? the fact that its not up is Criminal!

I’m trying to get that speed to play Don’t Stop Believing and this is my issue I think.
I thought I was the only one who liked guitar picks and was interested in understanding them more, every time I tried to talk to other people I knew who played the guitar, they looked at me like "It's a guitar pick, man, either choose a thin one or a thicker one, duh"
I started playing the viola at 80 years old and I’m told my progress is excellent! It’s never too late and you can teach an old dog new tricks!!😀
Does growing one area come at the expense of another, or is it just strictly bigger?
Nearly 1M views, and they say "electric guitar is dead". Rock forever!
Had Joe as my guitar instructor at Berklee. Was a very cool and funny guy. Very informative in not just in shred, but all styles of guitar.
I love you man. Thank you so much!

Is Troy still making YT videos. These are incredible…
Hey Troy, I just discovered your channel (thanks to Uncle Ben Eller) and I'm loving what you do. I have a quick question. I noticed you tend to use a lot of short-scale guitars (like the Mustang here). Is there a reason for that? It's really odd to see someone shredding on a Mustang or Duo Sonic!
Hey Troy this is a really stunning piece of work. However I have something in mind, I feel like the dart throwing motion can be easier for hyper supinator people, for example, I have a very good pronation movement so it’s really hard for me to do wrist extension but I’m very confortable with cupping. Does it apply here ? I mean being hyper pronator can I do the rêver dart throwing motion be reverse like by cupping ? Greeting me from France
Wow ... David plays so clearly ... incredible !!!
At 6:38, the narrator says "when I met Carl and Steve in 2007". Who is steve?
incorrect sir
After using a Jazz III pick for centuries I've decided that they are crap. These days I prefer a Dunlop Stubby. They glide across the strings and have no shitty plossives to deal with. They are superb for economy picking.
Jimmy is just magic. What a command of the instrument. I just love this guy. Thank you Maestro
This is not a criticism against this video, let me start by saying that. I frel like in general this analytics thing started to get a bit weird and down the rabbit hole. I stopped over analysing. You need to test what works best for you following common practices, guidelines, not every player uses same picking technique, not everyone’s anatomy is same. There IS NOT one unique best technique for picking. And the goal is to create music, improvise and compose not hand gymnastics! It sounds like some people started to miss point and make music for mechanics, instead mechanics should serve for creating music. Quick hint, although wrist movement should be the main approach, at some point you can’t go up to higher speeds without engaging some forarm muscles. And understand what ‘you’ need to do for fast picking your body will find the way ‘how’ to deliver it. Keep pick closer to strings, focus on next note and practise wisely. And remember no ones gives a damn about how perfect is your picking angle, people remembers chords, melodies, licks, riffs and feelings.
Absolutely monstrous. God damn he's so fucking good
which guitar is troy playing?
Wow!
Impressive, and a little noisy at the same time...
As a DSX player it's not clear to me what's your suggestion regarding learning a song written by a USX player. For instance, If I want to learnsome Eric Johnson song, full of two-notes-per-string phrases, should I try to match and learn his USX motion? Or it's better to adapt the song to my DSX motion, basically inverting the starting stroke of each lick? In other words, should we embrace our "natural" motion or it's better to do some effort to adapt to a new one?
You did it too fast ,, me not understand what tools me need to get at home Depot 👶🎤🙏👶🎤🙏
